Smoking is a nasty habit of millions of people around the globe causing many illnesses, some of which may even lead to death. It is important to realize that when we are talking of tobacco we describe a highly addictive substance abuse because of the nicotine that it contains. Smoking may be the reason of such serious conditions as heart attacks, strokes, breathing issues and different kinds of cancers. To some stop-smoking drugs may be a good way out. However, passive smokers may experience breathing issues and asthma. Minor health problems that smoking causes to both – active and passive smokers are high blood pressure, headaches, elevated heart rate and many others. Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of many fetal problems such as:
- Pregnancy complications(bleeding, placenta detachment, premature birth, ectopic pregnancy);
- Stillbirth or death in the 1st weeks after birth (the risk is higher by 1/3);
- Congenital defects (cleft palate etc.);
- Low weight in birth;
- Slower growth, development, health of the kid (higher risk of asthma).
It is nothing but a myth that smoke quitting during pregnancy is too stressful, and therefore can be used by some of the smokers as an excuse to keep on doing so. When carrying a baby, it is highly recommended to reduce and then stop smoking entirely. Non-medication treatments are used in this case.
Thankfully, it’s never too late to stop and there are various ways to do so, some of which are medications to help quit smoking.
When a person decides to give up cigarettes, it may be easier for them to do if they think of it as of a process which helps their body recover within basically the first hours without tobacco. Their body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure will be getting back to normal marks, capacity of lungs will be growing and breathing will get deeper due to bronchial tubes relaxation. Toxic carbon monoxide levels in blood will be decreasing, and there will be more oxygen in it instead. Another important thing about quitting smoking is that the earlier it is done, the more benefit to health there will be in the long run. Among other treatments that help smokers quit their bad habit are support groups, nicotine replacement therapies and medications to stop smoking.
As any meds have adverse effects, of course drugs to help quit smoking are no exception. Some of them are allergic reactions (rash, redness, swelling etc.), nausea, sleep issues, constipation, gas etc.
