What is Alesse?

Alesse is a widely used hormonal contraceptive usually prescribed for birth control purposes. It is an oral medication that averts ovulation through changes in uterine lining and cervical mucus of the recipient, stopping the sperm from getting to the uterus and blocking a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus.

How to take Alesse?

Alesse is taken with food or without it, orally yet it is advised to take the drug after a meal to prevent indigestion. Even though you can buy Alesse online, the treatment should only be started on the first day of the menstruation, or on the first Sunday that follows it. Generally it is recommended to administer Alesse birth control drugs every day at the same time, where the time gap is no more than 24 hours. The so called reminder pills are taken during the period every 28 days which keeps your cycle regular. Once the entire pack is finished, the new one should be started the following day. Keep in mind that there can be bleeding in the first 3 months of treatment. Let your physician know if it is too intensive or long. At the beginning of the treatment course or in case you miss taking at least one pill, additional contraception may be required. It will also be necessary if you have severe diarrhea or vomiting. You can use condoms and/or a spermicide for that purpose in order to avoid pregnancy.

Some medications may decrease the effect of Alesse in pregnancy prevention. Among them are antibiotics, anti-seizure meds, hepatitis C drugs, barbiturate sedatives and HIV/AIDS preparations. You should mention all the drugs you take to your doctor prior to starting treatment. Alesse can pass through breast milk, so again, talk to your doctor regarding breastfeeding while using the pills.

When not to take Alesse?

Please note, that it is not recommended to take Alesse in case you have or had at least one of the following conditions:

  • Uterine or breast cancer
  • Diabetes (eye or kidney complications)
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Intense or abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Epilepsy or any kind of seizures
  • History of a blood clot, blood clotting disorder or a stroke
  • Heart disease or/and heart attacks in the past
  • Fibrocystic breast disease in the past
  • Depression
  • Varicosis
  • High blood pressure
  • Severe migraine
  • Smoking
  • Age over 35

The list above may be incomplete because of the individual conditions that also apply.

Adverse effects

Alesse may cause a number of side effects such as nausea, vomiting, bloating, breast swelling, softness or pain, appetite and weight gain, intense bleeding, vaginal itching, dizziness, nervousness, exhaustion, loss or increased growth of hair, change of migraine severity or its pattern, depression symptoms and some others depending on an individual condition of a recipient. If any of the symptoms present once you have started taking Alesse, contact your doctor immediately.

Where to buy Alesse?

You can acquire Alesse both in brick-and-mortar drugstore or buy it online at the Internet pharmacy, however it is not an over-the-counter medicine, so you will need a physician to prescribe it for you.
